St. Mary's City, Md. – St.
Mary's College of Maryland and Cazenovia College combined for
33 hits in two games as each team came away with a win in
Sunday's non-conference doubleheader.
Senior Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great
Mills) was the hero of the first game as Kralle
registered the game-winning two-out single to lift St. Mary's
(2-5) to a 10-9 triumph in the first game.
First-year RHP Mike Bitanga (Rockville,
Md./Good Counsel) picked up his first collegiate win with 2.0
innings of relief, fanning three and giving up just one hit.
The first inning of the first game lasted an hour as the two
squads combined for 13 runs with Cazenovia (1-1) claiming an 8-5
lead after the inning finally came to an end. The Seahawks
tacked on single runs in the second and fourth innings to cut the
deficit to 8-7.
The Wildcats (1-1) scored their ninth run in the fifth for a
two-run cushion before St. Mary's knotted the game at 9-9
with two runs in the sixth, setting up the game for
Kralle's heroics.
Senior Donald Redmiles (Davidsonville,
Md./DeMatha) was the Seahawk offensive leader in the first game,
going 4-for-5, including his first double of the year, with a run
scored and an RBI while sophomore Nick Urso
(Newtown, Conn./Newtown) went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
First-year RHP Joe Rogers (Broadalbin, N.Y.)
suffered the loss as Rogers allowed three runs on
seven hits in 3.2 innings of work with three strikeouts and two
walks.
The second game was a “walkfest” as Cazenovia and
St. Mary's pitchers combined for 19 walks in the
contest. The Wildcats broke a 1-1 tie with six runs in the
second to record a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.
Senior RHP Joe Pallone (Liverpool, N.Y.)
notched the win with five runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of
work. Pallone walked six while striking out
four.
Senior captain Jacen Killebrew (La Plata,
Md./La Plata) paced the Seahawks at the plate in the nightcap with
a 2-for-3 effort with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Sophomore RHP Eric Gronbeck (Owings,
Md./Northern) took the loss on the mound as
Gronbeck gave up four runs (two earned) on one hit
in 1.0 inning of work with four works and two strikeouts.
The Seahawks will see Cazenovia again on Wednesday, March 10 for
a single, nine-inning contest at the Hawk's Nest. First
pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
