York, Pa. – Sophomore John Dehm (Trumbull, Conn./Middlesex School [Mass.]) notched
the game-winning goal with 4:44 remaining in regulation to break a
9-9 draw and lift St. Mary's College of Maryland to a 10-9
come-from-behind victory over York (Pa.) College in Capital
Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Dehm completed a feed from first-year attackman
Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) for just his
second goal of the season. Senior midfielder Ryan Alexander (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) had an opportunity to
give St. Mary's a two-goal cushion at 2:08 but senior
Chris Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster)
denied him the chance as Collins finished the
afternoon with 11 stops.
York's junior attackman Josh Gamble
(Easton, Md./Easton) fired off a shot to potentially tie the game
with three ticks on the clock but the shot sailed wide.
The Spartans (7-6, 4-1 CAC) edged St. Mary's, 3-2, in the
first period as three different players found the back of the net
for YCP. Two goals from senior attackman Ryan
McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston) propelled York to a
6-4 halftime advantage as the Spartans put forth another 3-2 outing
in the second quarter to end the half.
Junior attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park,
Md./Severn) paced the Seahawks in scoring with three goals and two
assists while Mull dished out three assists.
Sophomore attackman Michael Mules (Ellicott City,
Md./Boys' Latin) tallied three points as well with a goal and
two assists.
St. Mary's (7-4, 4-1 CAC) regrouped during intermission
and responded with a 4-1 showing in the third period.
Gamble netted the first goal of the quarter for a
three-goal Spartan cushion before the Seahawks rattled off four
unanswered goals, including a pair from Rosson, to
stake an 8-7 margin heading into the fourth period.
Junior midfielder Bobby Cooke (Ellicott City,
Md./Mt. Hebron) gave SMCM a 9-7 advantage to start the fourth
before York tied the game up with two goals in just over a
minute.
St. Mary's outshot the Spartans, 37-22, but York held the
edge in ground balls, 37-36, as Collins finished
with a game-high eight loose ball pickups. First-year
midfielder Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Saint John's) won 14-of-21 face-offs and scooped up
four loose balls.
Junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's)
made nine stops with one ground ball for the win.
The Seahawks will wrap up their road trip this Tuesday, April 13
as St. Mary's travels to Owings Mills to take on No. 3
Stevenson University in league action at 4:00.
