St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College
of Maryland clinched the third seed and a first-round home game in
the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament with
a 13-9 victory over University of Mary Washington Thursday
afternoon as junior attackman Chris Becraft
(Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) tallied a game-high four points.
St. Mary's (8-5, 5-2 CAC) will host the sixth seed in a first
round tournament game on Sunday, April 18 at Seahawk Stadium.
The game time and the Seahawks' first round opponent will be
announced Friday morning following the conclusion of tonight's
contest between Wesley College and Hood College to determine the
sixth seed.
Becraft notched a goal and three assists while
junior attackman Dennis Rosson
(Severna Park, Md./Severn) added two goals and one helper.
Three other Seahawks each found the back of the net twice as
well.
SMCM edged Mary Washington, 2-1, in the first period as junior
midfielder Bobby Cooke
(Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and sophomore attackman Brendan
Oster (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) each broke through the
Eagle defense. The Eagles avoided the shutout as sophomore
Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va./St.
Anne's-Belfield) ripped one past junior Stu Wheeler
(Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) at 1:59.
Mary Washington (7-8, 3-4 CAC) returned the favor in the second
quarter as the Eagles outscored the home team, 3-2, to go into
intermission tied, 4-4, as junior Kohl Meyer
(Shawnee, N.J./Shawnee) scored an unassisted goal with 11 seconds
left in the first half.
Junior Brian Meaney (Cold Spring Harbor,
N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) paced Mary Washington with three goals
while Snyder finished with two goals and two
assists and Meyer chipped in two goals and an
assist.
The Eagles netted two of the first three goals to start the
third period and stake their first lead of the game – a 6-5
advantage at 11:00. St. Mary's notched three of the final
four goals, including a pair in 50 seconds, to reclaim a one-goal
lead heading the final stanza.
The Seahawks quickly set the tone in the fourth with
back-to-back man-up goals in 35 seconds to post a 10-7 margin with
12:30 remaining in the contest. St. Mary's closed the deal by
tallying three of the game's final scores, including the last score
by senior midfielder Ryan
Alexander (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) at 2:20.
St. Mary's held a slight edge in both shots (35-31) and ground
balls (35-32) while first-year midfielder Albert
Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) won 12-of-23
face-offs and scooped up seven loose balls.
Wheeler finished the contest with eight saves
and one ground ball for his seventh win of the season while
sophomore Matt Prin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) recorded
11 stops and had two ground balls.
