No. 3 Stevenson Cuts St. Mary's CAC Tournament Run Short

Box Score

Owings Mills, Md. – After nearly losing to St. Mary's College of Maryland the week before, No. 3 Stevenson University was all business in the semifinals of the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament on a rainy, miserable Wednesday afternoon as the second-seeded Mustangs tallied a 16-3 victory over third-seeded St. Mary's.

Stevenson (15-1) punched its ticket to its third-straight CAC championship contest with today's win and the Mustangs will face 15-time defending CAC champion, No. 1 Salisbury University, who was an 18-7 winner over fifth-seeded University of Mary Washington, in Salisbury.

St. Mary's (9-6) played a solid first quarter, holding the Mustangs to just one goal on 11 shots as Stevenson's junior midfielder Neal Barthelme (Towson, Md./Dulaney) finally broke through the Seahawk defense with an unassisted goal at 4:01.  Junior midfielder Chris Morihlatko (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) evened the game at 1-all when he found the back of the net with 38 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Mustangs shutdown St. Mary's in the second stanza as Stevenson rattled off five unanswered goals.  Senior attackman Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) contributed three goals and an assist in the run, helping the hosts boast a 6-1 lead at halftime.

Kazimer finished afternoon with five goals and three assists for a game-high eight points while Barthelme ended the day with a hat trick and a helper.  Junior attackman Jimmy Dailey (Westminster, Md./Winter Mills) also added four points on two goals and two assists.

Stevenson carried its momentum into the start of the third period with two more goals before sophomore attackman Brendan Oster (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) notched an unassisted score for the Seahawks.  The Mustangs added another two to end the third and head into the final quarter with a 10-2 advantage.

Stevenson outscored the Seahawks, 6-1, in the final stanza as Barthelme struck twice.  The Mustangs dominated all offensive categories – shots (43-26), ground balls (38-23), and face-offs (15-of-21).

Making his first appearance since suffering a broken finger in a 12-9 win at No. 18 Lynchburg College on March 20, senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) totaled a career-high 17 saves, including 11 in the first half.

Junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) led St. Mary's with 15 saves after also totaling 11 in the first half.

The Seahawks will wrap their 2010 campaign on Saturday, May 1 when St. Mary's hosts Christopher Newport University at 1:00 pm.  The Seahawks will also recognize their three seniors – Ryan Alexander (Laurel, Md./Pallotti), Ryder Henry (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) and Chad McCarthy (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron).
