Owings Mills, Md. – After nearly losing
to St. Mary's College of Maryland the week before, No. 3 Stevenson
University was all business in the semifinals of the 2010 Capital
Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament on a rainy, miserable
Wednesday afternoon as the second-seeded Mustangs tallied a 16-3
victory over third-seeded St. Mary's.
Stevenson (15-1) punched its ticket to its third-straight CAC
championship contest with today's win and the Mustangs will face
15-time defending CAC champion, No. 1 Salisbury University, who was
an 18-7 winner over fifth-seeded University of Mary Washington, in
Salisbury.
St. Mary's (9-6) played a solid first quarter, holding the
Mustangs to just one goal on 11 shots as Stevenson's junior
midfielder Neal Barthelme (Towson, Md./Dulaney)
finally broke through the Seahawk defense with an unassisted goal
at 4:01. Junior midfielder Chris
Morihlatko (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) evened the game at
1-all when he found the back of the net with 38 seconds remaining
in the first period.
The Mustangs shutdown St. Mary's in the second stanza as
Stevenson rattled off five unanswered goals. Senior attackman
Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger)
contributed three goals and an assist in the run, helping the hosts
boast a 6-1 lead at halftime.
Kazimer finished afternoon with five goals and
three assists for a game-high eight points while
Barthelme ended the day with a hat trick and a
helper. Junior attackman Jimmy Dailey
(Westminster, Md./Winter Mills) also added four points on two goals
and two assists.
Stevenson carried its momentum into the start of the third
period with two more goals before sophomore attackman Brendan
Oster (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) notched an unassisted
score for the Seahawks. The Mustangs added another two to end
the third and head into the final quarter with a 10-2
advantage.
Stevenson outscored the Seahawks, 6-1, in the final stanza as
Barthelme struck twice. The Mustangs
dominated all offensive categories – shots (43-26), ground
balls (38-23), and face-offs (15-of-21).
Making his first appearance since suffering a broken finger
in a 12-9 win at No. 18 Lynchburg College on March 20, senior
Geoff Hebert (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) totaled a
career-high 17 saves, including 11 in the first half.
Junior Stu Wheeler
(Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) led St. Mary's with 15 saves after also
totaling 11 in the first half.
The Seahawks will wrap their 2010 campaign on Saturday, May 1
when St. Mary's hosts Christopher Newport University at 1:00
pm. The Seahawks will also recognize their three seniors
– Ryan
Alexander (Laurel, Md./Pallotti), Ryder Henry
(Washington, D.C./St. John's College) and Chad McCarthy
(Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron).
