Towson, Md. – With their 4-1 victory at
Goucher College on a hot, humid Wednesday afternoon, the St. Mary's
College of Maryland field hockey team kicked off the 2010-11
Seahawk athletic campaign on the right track.
Today's win marks St. Mary's 11th consecutive victory over the
Gophers. Goucher's last win came on October 16, 1999 as the
Gophers left Seahawk Stadium with a 3-2 triumph. Sophomore
forward Lauriann Parker
(Woodbine, Md./Glenelg), the reigning Capital Athletic Conference
Rookie of the Year, paced the Seahawks with two goals and an
assist.
Despite Goucher's junior goalie Micki Manheimer
(Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) making 10 first-half saves, the Seahawks
held a 3-0 halftime advantage. Manheimer
went on to finish the afternoon with 14 stops.
St. Mary's (1-0) struck first at 19:37 as sophomore forward
Ali
McIntosh (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) was able to
put one past Manheimer following a feed
from Parker. Parker
followed suit less than two minutes later with her first tally of
the season at 21:04 as she carried the ball all the way from the
halfway line and shot it past Manheimer.
Parker continued the attack just 34 seconds later
with her second score of the afternoon, putting back her own
rebound for the three-goal cushion at intermission.
Before Goucher was able to shutdown the St. Mary's offense in
the second half, sophomore midfielder Natalie
Hackstaff (Denver, Colo./St. Mary's Academy) found
first-year forward Rachel Heiss
(Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) to open up the scoring just a
minute into the start of the final period.
The Gophers (0-1) avoided the shutout at 62:30 when junior
forward Catherine Armao (Pleasantville,
N.Y./Pleasantville) snuck one past first-year goalie Zia Frazier
(Rockville, Md./Magruder) following a scramble in front of
goal.
Senior Lydia Garcia
(Bowie, Md./Seton) started in goal for the Seahawks and played the
entire first half, making just one save. First-year
Anastasia
Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) started the second half and
had one save in 22:39 minutes of action while
Frazier came in relief to finish out the game with
two stops.
The Seahawks outshot Goucher 24 to 9, including posting a 15-2
advantage in the first half, while Goucher edged the visitors, 9-8,
in penalty corners.
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, September 4 when
the Seahawks take on No. 15 Johns Hopkins University in
non-conference action at 1:00 pm.
