St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's
College of Maryland women's tennis team notched their first win of
the 2010-11 campaign as the Seahawks handed Shenandoah University a
6-3 setback Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Chelsea
Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) picked up
wins in both singles and doubles action to pace St. Mary's.
The Seahawks (1-1) owned a 2-1 advantage after doubles play as
Bradcovich and sophomore Marie Rau
(Ellicott City, Md./Howard) partnered up for a 9-8 (7-3) victory at
the No. 2 flight while the tandem of juniors Aviva Brown
(Pasadena, Md./Old Mill) and Alli Crawford
(Frederick, Md./Urbana) notched a 9-8 (9-7) win at the No. 3
flight, needing a tiebreaker set for the second time in a row.
Shenandoah's first-year Carla Wong (South
Riding, Va./Freedom) evened the match at 2-2 with her 6-1, 6-0
victory at No. 2 singles before the Seahawks claimed the next four
matches.
The Hornets (0-1) recorded their final point at No. 6 singles as
sophomore Bridget O'Rourke (Pompton Lakes,
N.J./Pompton Lakes) posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over
Crawford.
The Seahawks return to action next Sunday, September 19 as St.
Mary's travels to Virginia Beach to take on Virginia Wesleyan
College in non-conference action at 1:00 pm.
