Salem, Va. – The St. Mary's College
of Maryland field hockey team used a 5-0 first half to notch an 8-1
victory over host Roanoke College in non-conference action Saturday
afternoon. Seven different players scored in the romp with
sophomore forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine,
Md./Glenelg) leading the way with two goals.
St. Mary's, who was ranked 20th in this week's www.womensfieldhockey.com
weekly poll, remains undefeated, improving to 6-0 on the
season.
The Seahawks started the scoring early as junior midfielder
Sam Locke (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase)
netted a goal at 2:20. Sophomore midfielder Ellen Hackstaff (Denver, Colo./St. Mary's Academy) made it
a 2-0 game just over six minutes later as she scored off the
dribble.
Not even four minutes later, Parker found the
back of the cage at 12:00, taking a shot from the left side of the
circle for a 3-0 advantage. St. Mary's went up 4-0 at
24:12 as sophomore forward Ali McIntosh
(Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) put back a rebound.
The Seahawks headed into intermission with a 5-0 lead following
first-year forward Rachel Heiss' (Silver
Spring, Md./Paint Branch) score at 30:49.
Parker increased the lead to 6-0 at 55:02 as
she found the left corner from the middle of the circle.
Sophomore midfielder Katie Wisniewski (Perry Hall,
Md./Perry Hall) picked up her first career goal at 61:50 as she
tapped in a loose ball.
Senior captain Allie Skiest (Arnold, Md./Seton
Keough) tallied the last Seahawk goal at 66:24, putting in a loose
ball.
Roanoke (1-4) avoided the shutout with 28 seconds left in the
game as first-year Kelly Finn (Fairhaven, N.J.)
finished off a pass from first-year forward Carrie
Jones (Dresden, Maine/Hall-Dale).
St. Mary's dominated the game from start to finish,
outshooting the Maroons 41-7 and registering an 8-4 margin on
penalty corners.
Senior Lydia Garcia (Bowie, Md./Seton) and
first-years Anastasia Wash (Yorktown, Va./York)
and Zia Frazier (Rockville, Md./Magruder) combined
for the win with Wash making three stops in 46:04
and Frazier picking up one save in the final 11
minutes.
Juniors Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth,
Mass./Nauset Regional) and Katherine Muhvich
(Towson, Md./Towson) each played a half and totaled 22 saves while
the Maroon defense had five defensive saves.
St. Mary's will be back at it tomorrow when they take on
Bridgewater (Va.) College in non-conference action at 1:00 pm.
