Baltimore, Md. – Sophomore forward
Lauriann
Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) notched the overtime
game-winning goal nearly nine minutes into the first extra period
as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team spoiled No.
15 Johns Hopkins University's season- and home-opener Saturday
afternoon.
Johns Hopkins (0-1) was dominant in the overtime stanza,
controlling the ball from the opening whistle. The Blue Jays
were awarded six penalty corners in a five-minute span, firing off
five shots. However, the Seahawk defense stood strong against
Hopkins with senior Lydia Garcia
(Bowie, Md./Seton) stopping two shots and another one being
blocked. St. Mary's efficient defense led to
Parker's game-winning goal in transition.
Parker gathered a loose ball following a
defensive clear, dribbled in and shot from about five yards out,
dead center at 78:53.
In three meetings all-time, St. Mary's (2-0) has now won twice
against Hopkins with the Blue Jays' last win coming on September
17, 2005 – a 3-2 victory in Baltimore.
After a scoreless first half, the Seahawks struck first as a
loose ball came across the cage and junior midfielder Sam Locke
(Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), alone on the far post, banged
it home for her first goal of the season at 38:03.
Johns Hopkins' lone goal came at 44:33 when senior midfielder
Ariana Branchini (Old Lyme, Conn./Choate Rosemary
Hall) converted on a penalty stroke.
The Blue Jays outshot St. Mary's, 21-11, including a 14-2
advantage in the second half, but only managed six shots on goal as
Garcia finished with five saves in goal for the
Seahawks. Hopkins also dominated corners by a 22-5
margin.
Junior Kim Stein (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde
Park Memorial) tallied four stops for JHU.
St. Mary's will look to continue its winning ways tomorrow when
the Seahawks face Virginia Wesleyan College in a neutral site
contest at Johns Hopkins. Game is slated to start at 1:00
pm.
