Dover, Del. – No. 17 St. Mary's College of Maryland suffered its first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season as the Seahawks conceded a seven-point halftime and dropped a 95-80 decision to host Wesley College Monday afternoon. The loss now puts St. Mary's in a tie for first place with Wesley in the conference standings. The loss also snapped a three-game win streak for the Seahawks.
Senior captain Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) led a trio of Seahawks in double-digit scoring with 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting along with a game-best nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Chris Hutchinson (Owings Mills, Md./New Town) matched his career-high with 13 points while adding season-best five boards.
Senior captain Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) was the third Seahawk scoring in double figures as Franz notched a double-double on 12 points and season-best 10 assists.
St. Mary's (12-4, 6-1 CAC) bolstered its lead to 12 with 17:22 after starting the second half with a 10-5 run. The Wolverines then began to claw at the deficit and used a 23-9 run to regain the lead at 10:25 (61-59) following a long-range bomb by senior Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) who finished the game with 15 points. After taking back control of the game, Wesley finished off the game by outscoring the visitors, 34-21.
The Wolverines (10-6, 6-1 CAC) capitalized on 23 trips to the free throw line in the second half, making 19 of those attempts, and finished the game with a 25-of-33 effort at the line.
Wesley had five players score in double digits as sophomore Paul Reynolds (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) dropped a game-high 28 points while senior guard Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) added 20 points and eight boards. Junior guards Darrell Johnson (New Castle, Del./Howard) and Chris Douglas (Landover, Md./Jericho Prep Academy) chipped in 16 and 12 points, respectively.
The first half featured four tied scores and three lead changes. Wesley opened up the game with an 8-0 run before the Seahawks went on a 12-4 run to knot the contest for the first time at 11:08 following a layup by sophomore forward Jeff Haus (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). The Wolverines were only able to sustain a three-point lead or less over the next six minutes.
Hutchinson converted two free throws at 5:13 to force the fourth draw of the game and spark an 18-9 run to close out the half for a 40-33 St. Mary's halftime advantage.
St. Mary's will look to rebound Wednesday night with a home league contest against Salisbury University at 8:00 pm. During halftime, sixth-year head coach Chris Harney will be recognized for his 100th career win as well as becoming the program's all-time winningest coach.
