Arlington, Va. – Senior forward Kyle Jarczynski (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) and junior guard James Davenport (Owings Mills, Md./Loyola Blakefield) each tallied 11 points off the bench in leading No. 12 St. Mary's College of Maryland to a 74-65 victory over host Marymount (Va.) University Wednesday night to remain undefeated in Capital Athletic Conference action.
With the win, sixth-year head coach Chris Harney '97 (Brick, N.J.) becomes the school's all-time winningest coach with 101 victories. Coach Harney surpasses former St. Mary's skipper Ed Cole (1966-67, 1969-74) who left the program with a record of 100-56 in six seasons. Coach Harney now owns a career overall mark of 101-51 (54-28 CAC) for a .664 winning percentage – the best in school history.
The Seahawk bench was crucial once again, scoring over 50% of the team's points for the third time this season as the reserves tallied 38 points on the night. All of Davenport's 11 points came at the charity stripe as he went 11-of-13, including a perfect 8-of-8 in the second half, in 15 minutes on the court. Jarczynski was 4-of-5 from the floor and pulled down a game-best seven rebounds in 19 minutes.
First-year center Christian MacAuley (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) also grabbed seven boards for the Seahawks while adding eight points, two blocks, and one steal. Senior center Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) chipped in nine points, two caroms, one assist, and one steal.
Despite being held to no three-point field goals in the first half, St. Mary's edged the Saints for a 31-29 halftime advantage as the Seahawks overcame a five-point deficit in the final 4:19 of the first stanza with a 12-5 run. During the run, St. Mary's was 6-of-8 at the free throw line while two steals by first-year guard Kyle Wise (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) resulted in three points.
St. Mary's (10-3, 4-0 CAC) was an impressive 30-of-40 from the free throw line for the game, including 19-of-25 during the second stanza. The Seahawks broke open the contest with a 14-6 run at the start of the second half to establish a double-digit margin for the remainder of the game. The visitors led by as many as 15 with 1:25 remaining.
The Saints (2-11, 0-5 CAC) were led in the loss by senior guard Stephen Simoneau (Sterling, Va./Calvary Temple Christian) with a game-best 18 points while forwards Reed Scott (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Tarek Ammoury (McLean, Va./McLean) each had 10 points. Scott hauled in seven boards as well.
St. Mary's hopes to continue its winning ways this Saturday, January 8 as the Seahawks take on Wesley College in Dover, Delaware in a rematch of last year's CAC championship game, which St. Mary's won 80-76 for the program's third conference title. Tip-off is at 4:00 pm.
