St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of their 2011-12 schedule on a high note as the Seahawks recorded a 7-2 non-conference victory over NCAA Division II Chowan University Sunday afternoon.
St. Mary's (2-2) headed into singles action with a 2-1 lead with the Seahawks picking up easy wins at the second and third doubles flights.
First-year Melissa Bowman (Derwood, Md./Magruder) notched a forfeit win at No. 6 singles while senior Sarah Minkoff (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) increased St. Mary's lead to 4-1 with a shutout straight set win at fifth singles flight.
Junior Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and first-year Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) both earned straight set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, to bolster their team's lead to 6-1. Stumpfig owns a perfect 4-0 singles record in dual matches.
Chowan's sophomore Inesa Asatryan (Yaroslavl, Russia) tallied her team's second point with a shutout straight set win at No. 1 singles.
Sophomore Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) wrapped up the win for the Seahawks with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over first-year Heaven Rushing (Ahoskie, N.C.) at No. 4 singles.
The Seahawks will now be off until February 25 when St. Mary's kicks off the spring season with a non-conference match at Division II Virginia Union University at 1:00 pm.
