St. Mary's City, Md. – It was a wild and crazy Saturday afternoon at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team needed last minute heroics to pull out an 89-81 overtime Capital Athletic Conference win over Stevenson University as the two-time defending CAC champions began their title defense.

After Stevenson sophomore forward Joe Hindle's (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) three-pointer stretched his team's lead to 71-57 with 3:13 left in regulation, the Seahawks (5-2, 1-0 CAC) went to work to erase the 14-point deficit with a 17-3 run in the final 2:15 span and force the extra period.  First-year guard Nick LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) sparked the run with a layup while junior guard Devin Spencer (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) fired off three long-range bombs over a 51-second span.

Junior guard Christopher Hutchinson (Owings Mills, Md./New Town) stole the ball from senior guard Greg Collins (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) with 14 ticks on the clock on an inbounds play and then Hutchinson laid it in at 10.7 to knot the contest at 74-74.  Hindle put up an off-the-mark jump shot in the waning seconds and sophomore forward Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla./Archbishop Curley) grabbed the rebound but was unable to get a shot off before time expired.

Separation was hard to come by in overtime as the contest remained tied (81-81) with 1:45 left in OT following a three-point play by junior guard Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill).  St. Mary's took over with an 8-0 run by going 6-of-8 from the free throw line, including a 4-of-6 effort by Spencer.

Four Seahawk starters finished in double digits with Spencer leading the way as he notched a career-best 20 points on 4-of-7 shooting from downtown.  Sophomore forward Christian MacAuley (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 14 points and a game-best nine rebounds while junior forward Jeff Haus (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) contributed 13 points and eight boards.

Stevenson (2-5, 0-2 CAC) was in the driver seat during the first half as the Seahawks only led in the first 1:15 of the game before the Mustangs went on a 13-4 run to establish an eight-point lead at 13:57.  Stevenson never relinquished its lead as they headed into halftime with a 34-28 advantage as Burrier hit a jumper at the buzzer.

Hutchinson finished the afternoon with 10 points and three assists while sophomore guard Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) chipped in 10 points off the bench.

The Seahawks look to make it three in a row on Wednesday, December 7 as the Seahawks travel to York College of Pennsylvania (5-2, 2-0 CAC).  Tip-off is at 8:00 pm.
