Severna Park, Md. – The No. 20 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team came out on the short-end of a 15-7 loss to No. 16 Dickinson College on neutral ground at the Severn School Saturday afternoon.
Dickinson (2-0) controlled the first period as the Red Devils scored six unanswered goals, including two each by first-year attackman Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and senior midfielder Pat Curley (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St. Joseph).
The Seahawks (0-2) responded by outscoring Dickinson, 5-3, in the second quarter. After each trading a goal, St. Mary's rattled off four straight to erase the six-goal deficit and pull within 7-5 at the 3:13 mark. But two goals in the final 1:12 of the half gave the Red Devils a 9-5 advantage at halftime.
Junior attackman Billy Scheurer (Telford, Pa./Souderton Area) cut the deficit to three for the Seahawks with the first tally of the third stanza but two straight Dickinson goals stretched the Red Devils' lead to 11-6 at the 8:50 mark. Each team had a goal in the final seven minutes of the period to maintain Dickinson's five-goal lead.
Heading into the fourth stanza down 12-7, the Seahawks are shutout for 15 minutes again as Dickinson nets the only three goals of the period.
Junior attackman Michael Mules (Ellicott City, Md./Boys' Latin) paced the St. Mary's offense with two goals while senior attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) notched a goal and two assists.
Dickinson outshot the Seahawks, 44-30, while St. Mary's edged the Red Devils in ground balls, 36-34. Face-offs were even at 12 apiece with sophomore Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) winning nine for the Seahawks.
In goal, junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) collected seven saves and nine goals against in the first half while senior Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded 10 stops in the second half.
St. Mary's hopes to pick up its first win of the season next Sunday, March 6 when the Seahawks welcome Franklin & Marshall College to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 1:00 pm.
