St. Mary's City, Md. – Three Seahawks recorded wins as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team saw their win streak halted at three with a 6-3 loss to undefeated Southern Virginia University Friday afternoon.
Junior Jackie Brady (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and first-year Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) gave the Seahawks (3-6) a 1-0 lead with their 8-0 win over first-year Rebekah Ericson (Morgan, Utah/Morgan) and sophomore Brittany Gibbons (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) at No. 3 doubles.
Southern Virginia (9-0) responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by 8-3 and 8-1 decisions, respectively, to head into singles play with a 2-1 advantage. SVU then went up 6-1 with victories at the first four singles flights.
First-year Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) picked up St. Mary's second point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over senior Kayela Bridge (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) at No. 5 singles.
Stine closed out the match by battling sophomore Brynn McGinn (Bedford, Ind./Bedford) in straight sets for a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win at the sixth singles flight.
St. Mary's will enjoy a well-deserved Spring Break before returning to action on Thursday, March 24 with a non-conference match against Mary Baldwin College at the Somerset Tennis Complex at 3:00 pm.
