Box Score

Severna Park, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team pretty much controlled every statistical category in Wednesday's matchup with No. 14 Denison University except for the score as Denison (3-1) came away with a 16-4 non-conference victory over the Seahawks (1-4) on neutral ground at Severn School's Lynch Field.  Three straight five-goal quarters helped Denison secure the win as well as four Big Red players recording multiple-goal efforts.

St. Mary's played the nationally-ranked Big Red tough in the first period as junior Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) turned away five of Denison's nine shots.  Junior midfielder Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas) finally broke through the Seahawk defense with just 1:28 remaining in the first quarter.

The Big Red notched the first two goals of the second stanza to go up three goals to none at 8:34 before senior attackman Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) notched his first tally of the season nearly two minutes later off an assist by senior midfielder Chris Morihlatko (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) to put St. Mary's on the board.  Denison picked up a man-down goal to keep the three-goal cushion before senior midfielder Will Bell (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) converted a pass from senior attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) at 3:39 to cut the lead back to two.

Denison then scored the final two goals of the half, including one with eight seconds left, to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.  Senior attackman Kyle Brown (Glenview, Ill.) paced the Big Red offense with a hat trick while senior midfielder Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass.) added a goal and three assists.

Following a pair of Denison goals in a 56-second span to start the third, senior attackman Sean Reitenbach (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) found the back of the net for the Seahawks off an assist by Rosson at 10:30.  The Big Red would then go on to score the game's next eight goals, starting at the 8:58 mark of the third period and ending at the 3:01 mark of the fourth quarter.

Sophomore attackman Stewart D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn) tallied the last Seahawk goal with 37 seconds remaining in the game.

A bright spot for the Seahawks was sophomore Albert Mitchell's (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) work at the face-off X as Mitchell won 13-of-18 to help his team post a .625 face-off percentage for the game.  Mitchell also scooped up a game-high eight ground balls while junior defensemen Peter Windsor (Towson, Md./St. Paul's) and Eric Heisner (Collegeville, Pa./La Salle College) each had two caused turnovers.

Simpson played well between the pipes for the Seahawks, making nine saves with three ground balls and a caused turnover in nearly 49 minutes of action.  Sophomore Ben Wheeler (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) finished out the game with two saves and allowed four goals.

St. Mary's opens up Capital Athletic Conference play this Saturday, March 19 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, against University of Mary Washington at 1:00 pm.
