St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) notched a three-set triumph at No. 4 singles while tying a school record in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team to an important 5-4 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State University on Wednesday.
Ramsey captured the first set, 6-2, before first-year Amber Beckman (Cumberland, Md.) claimed a 6-4 win in the second. Ramsey then battled to a 6-4 win in the third set for her 36th career singles victory, tying the career record set by Sarah Pernick '07.
The Seahawks (7-9, 3-2 CAC) are now tied for third in the conference standings with York College of Pennsylvania.
St. Mary's staked a 2-1 lead after doubles as the Seahawks notched wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles while the tandem of Beckman and sophomore Megan Martin (Richmond, Va./Mills Goodwin) notched an 8-5 victory to put Frostburg (5-8, 2-5 CAC) on the board.
Frostburg evened up the match at 2-2 as senior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) defeated sophomore Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Martin gave the Bobcats a 3-2 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over sophomore Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) at the second singles flight.
First-year Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) notched her ninth win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles for a 3-3 deadlock.
First-year Brianna Mazimann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) maintained Frostburg ahead by one with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over first-year Allison Griffin (Dayton, Md./River Hill) at sixth singles.
The match was tied for the fourth time when junior Sarah Minkoff (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) registered a 6-1, 6-3 win over junior Jannill Sites (Waynesboro, Pa./James Buchanan) at No. 3 singles.
St. Mary's will return to action tomorrow as the Seahawks travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on conference opponent, University of Mary Washington, at 6:30 pm.
