Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team dropped to 7-10 overall (3-3 CAC) as the Seahawks were blanked, 9-0, by No. 23 University of Mary Washington Thursday night in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The duo of juniors Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Sarah Minkoff (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) took three games from UMW's Rachel Covington (Danville, Va./George Washington) and Danielle Velardi (Branford, Conn./Branford) before suffering an 8-3 defeat at No. 2 doubles.
The tandem of first-years Allison Griffin (Dayton, Md./River Hill) and Pooja Taneja (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) claimed two games as well at No. 3 doubles before dropping an 8-2 decision to Mary Washington's Anna Richman (Bear, Del./Middleton) and Maddy Martin (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Prep).
Ramsey and first-year Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) were the only Seahawks to nab game wins during singles action.
Gaul fell 6-0, 6-1 to Lindsay Raulston (Franklin, Va./Southampton Academy) at No. 2 singles while Ramsey succumbed to a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Velardi.
Mary Washington (14-7, 7-0 CAC), who is regionally ranked at No. 6 in the Atlantic South region, is the seven-time defending CAC champion.
The Seahawks will wrap up conference action tomorrow as St. Mary's travels to Frederick to take on Hood College at 3:00 pm.
