Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team played second-ranked Salisbury University to a 4-4 deadlock through the first three periods before Salisbury unleashed eight unanswered goals to claim a 12-4 Capital Athletic Conference victory on a soggy Saturday afternoon.

Salisbury (11-0, 4-0 CAC) struck first as senior midfielder Shawn Zordani (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) ripped a shot to the top right corner at 11:39.  St. Mary's responded with an unassisted goal of its own when sophomore attackman Stewart D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn) lasered in a shot to the bottom left corner at 5:05.

The 1-1 stalemate held until the 11:49 mark of the second period when junior attackman J.P. Lennon (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored an unassisted goal to give the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage.  Twenty-eight seconds later, Salisbury's sophomore midfielder Ryan Clarke (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) answered with an unassisted tally.  The Sea Gulls staked a 3-2 lead behind senior midfielder Spencer Smith's (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) score at 8:57.  The two teams headed into halftime tied at 3-3 following sophomore attackman Patrick Mull's (Fallston, Md./Fallston) second goal of the season.

Senior midfielder Bobby Cooke (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) put St. Mary's back on top (4-3) to start the third stanza with his 10th tally of the year at the 12:50 mark.  Junior attackman Matt Cannone (Bayport, N.Y./Bethpage) evened the game for the fourth and final time as Cannone finished off a pass from junior attackman Erik Krum (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) at 10:21.

A 30-minute lightning delay was called with 4:46 remaining in the third period.

Once the game resumed, St. Mary's was unable to keep possession, committing three turnovers, but despite those miscues, the Seahawks managed to maintain a 4-4 draw until the final minute of the third quarter.  Junior attackman Tony Mendes (Chapel Hill, N.C./E. Chapel Hill) rolled around the crease and found the back of the net with 51 seconds remaining in the period to send the Sea Gulls into the final stanza with a 5-4 edge.

The fourth period belonged to Salisbury as eight different Sea Gulls were involved in the team's seven goals.  Mendes and senior midfielder Perry Craz (Remsenburg, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) each notched two goals in the 7-0 run while Krum dished out two assists.

In goal, junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) made six saves in the first half while senior Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) had six stops and three ground balls in the final 30 minutes.

St. Mary's will return to action on Monday, April 4 as the Seahawks resume their lightning-delayed game with Marymount (Va.) University (from March 23).  The game will be played at Seahawk Stadium at 4:00 pm and the Seahawks will start the game with a 3-0 lead and 4:49 remaining in the first period.
