St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team evened up their record Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks (6-6, 1-1 CAC) suffered a 6-3 setback at the hands of York College of Pennsylvania (7-3, 1-2 CAC).
York started the match with a 2-0 lead with doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3 before the tandem of sophomore Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first-year Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) notched the Seahawks' first point with a 9-8 (7-5) triumph over seniors Travis Klein (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East), this week's CAC Player of the Week, and Philip Myers (York, Pa./William Penn) at first doubles.
After the Spartans picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, first-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) pulled St. Mary's within 4-2 with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles over senior Justin Hostetter (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area). Guzzone is second on the team with eight singles win as he has won now four in a row.
Myers responded for York by capturing the third singles flight with a 6-1, 7-5 win over sophomore Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) for a 5-2 margin.
Gear posted the Seahawks' third point with his team-leading 10th singles win of the season as he defeated senior Ryan Harvey (Fallston, Md./Fallston), 5-7, 6-0, 10-2, at No. 2 singles. Gear has now won seven straight, owning a 5-1 mark at No. 2 and a 4-0 record at No. 3.
Wong dropped a hard-fought battle at No. 1 singles, falling 3-6, 6-2, 9-11 to Klein.
The Seahawks will return to action tomorrow as St. Mary's welcomes Stevenson University to the Somerset Tennis Complex for another conference match at 4:00 pm.
