St. Mary's City, Md. – York College of Pennsylvania halted the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team win streak at three matches as York recorded its first Capital Athletic Conference victory of the season with a 5-4 decision over the Seahawks on Sunday afternoon.
York's junior Katelyn Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) won the match for the Spartans (6-3, 1-2 CAC) as Acker picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over first-year Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) at No. 2 singles to break the 4-4 deadlock.
The Seahawks (6-7, 2-1 CAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead as the doubles teams of junior Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern)/first-year Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and Gaul/junior Jackie Brady (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) notched wins at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, respectively.
Acker and first-year Sarah Wargo (York, Pa./York Catholic) put York on the board with a 9-7 victory at first doubles over sophomores Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial).
Ramsey and Stine extended St. Mary's lead to 4-1 as Ramsey won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Stine added a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles. With today's wins, Ramsey and Stine both extended their win streaks. Ramsey has won four straight and owns a team-best eight victories while Stine is 7-2 on the season after winning seven in a row.
The Spartans took over from there with four consecutive singles wins.
St. Mary's will return to action on Wednesday, April 6 as the Seahawks welcome Salisbury University, who is ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region, to the Somerset Tennis Complex for another league match at 3:30 pm.
