St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback at the hands of regionally-ranked Salisbury University in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
The Seahawks (6-8, 2-2 CAC) took 20 games from Salisbury (10-2, 4-1 CAC), who is ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region.
Junior Sarah Minkoff (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) and first-year Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) fought the tandem of first-year Jessica Babyak (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) and sophomore Rachel Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) at No. 2 doubles but succumbed to an 8-4 defeat.
Junior Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) then battled Babyak at No. 4 singles but Babyak survived with Ramsey's efforts with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
First-year Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) gave senior Amy Matonak (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) a run for her money but Matonak won the contest, 6-3, 6-1 to end Stine's win streak at seven.
Salisbury has now won 16 straight against the Seahawks, including nine shutout victories.
St. Mary's will return to action on Friday, April 8 as the Seahawks travel to Frederick to face conference rival, Hood College, in another league match at 3:00 pm.
