Baltimore, Md. – First-year Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) improved to 2-0 on the young season as Stumpfig helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over Notre Dame of Maryland University Sunday afternoon for their first win of the 2011-12 campaign.
Stumpfig and senior Alli Crawford (Frederick, Md./Urbana) teamed up for St. Mary's (1-1) first point of the match, notching an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. The duo of senior Jackie Brady (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and sophomore Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) tallied an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles before Notre Dame (2-3-1) cut into St. Mary's 2-0 lead with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Stine, Stumpfig, and senior Sarah Minkoff (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) posted wins at singles flights, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, to give the Seahawks a 5-1 lead.
The Gators pulled within 5-3 with victories at the No. 1 and No. 4 singles flight before junior Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) wrapped up the win for the Seahawks with an 8-5 pro-set win at No. 2 singles.
The Seahawks will return to action on Friday, September 23 when St. Mary's travels to Virginia Beach, Va. to face Virginia Wesleyan College at the Virginia Beach Bash. The match starts at 4:00 pm.
