St. Mary's City, Md. – The nationally-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team had yet another successful weekend as the Seahawks competed in the Fall Women's Intersectional and Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy; the Tom Curtis Memorial Trophy at Georgetown University; and the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island.
The Fall Women's Intersectional took over Annapolis Harbor on Saturday as sixteen schools competed. The scores from the A, B, and C divisions were tallied together to make up the final score. In the A division, senior Kayla McComb (Newport Beach, Calif.), junior Nicole DeAngeli (Reno, Nev.) and first-year Natasha Skaalrud (White Bear Lake, Minn.) took fourth place. The B division sailors were seniors Mimi Roller (St. John, V.I.) and Allie Smith (Pembroke, Mass.) and first-year Marissa Golison (Long Beach, Calif.) and the trio claimed second place. In the C division, sophomore Catherine Shanahan (Tierra Verde, Fla.) placed second. Overall, St. Mary's beat second-place Yale University by over 30 points.
The Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championships kicked off Saturday morning at the mouth of the Severn River. Sailing conditions were tricky with rapidly shifting winds and chillier weather on Sunday but junior John Wallace (St. Petersburg, Fla.) managed to take third place in the standings, even with a race four disqualification. As a top-four finisher in the field of eighteen sailors, Wallace now advances to the ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championships at the University of Southern California on November 2-4.
St. Mary's was also represented at the Tom Curtis Memorial Regatta at Georgetown University where the Seahawks claimed second place overall just behind the Georgetown Hoyas in the 16-team field. Twelve races were sailed in both A and B divisions on Saturday and Sunday in variable weather conditions. Sailing for St. Mary's were sophomore Tommy Galster (Wickford, R.I.) and first-year Kaitlyn Noreen (Minneapolis, Minn.) in the A division and junior Randall Hause (Newport Beach, Calif.) and first-year Morgan Bench (Chestertown, Md.) in the B division.
The Seahawks also competed in the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island, where beautiful Saturday weather turned not race-worthy on Sunday. St. Mary's took sixth place in a field of eighteen schools, with juniors Fletcher Sims (Annapolis, Md.) and Kelley Merryman (Severna Park, Md.) sailing the A division and sophomore Jacob LaDow (San Diego, Calif.) and first-year Mariah Leffingwell (Easton, Md.) competing in the B division.
St. Mary's will be back in action at several regattas on October 13-14. The team will be represented at the Navy Fall Intersectional in Annapolis; the Yale University Women's Intersectional; and the Central Fall #2 at Washington College.
