St. Mary’s College Sailing Concludes Up 2024-25 Campaign

5/30/2025 11:23:00 PM

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – That's a wrap on the 2024-25 season for the St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team as St. Mary's College finished 16th at the 2025 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Open Fleet Race National Championship Friday afternoon (May 30), which the Seahawks hosted at the James P. Muldoon River Center and the Teddy Turner Waterfront.

SMCM, who entered the Open Fleet Race Nationals seeded 12th, tallied 168 points (combined score of Division A and Division B) over two days of championship competition for 16th place in the 18-team field.

Stanford University claimed the Henry A. Morss Trophy as the 2025 ICSA Open Fleet Race National Champion. This is Stanford's third national title of the 2024-25 season as the Cardinal also captured the ICSA Women's Team Race National Championship (April 28) and the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship last Friday (May 23) at St. Mary's College.

Competition got underway early this morning at 8:15 am as the first day of finals (May 29) was a bust with no races being completed due to a lack of wind. At least six races – three in Division A and three in Division B – needed to be completed today to declare it an official regatta and crown a national champion. The racing committee was able to conduct seven races in each division, battling shifty conditions all day.

Senior skipper Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn) and senior crew Zoë Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) posted a 13th-place finish in Division A with 70 points. There was a four-point spread between 11th-place University of Rhode Island (66 pts), 12th-place College of Charleston (68 pts), and St. Mary's College. The duo's best finish of the day was sixth in Race 6A while collecting eighth-place finishes in Races 8A, 4A, and 7A.

In Division B, the Seahawks placed 17th with 98 points. Sophomore skipper Landon Cormie (Vineyard Haven, Mass./Falmouth Academy) and junior crew Emily Shioutakon (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) sailed Races 3B through 6B, notching SMCM's highest finish in Division B – ninth in Race 3B.
