SMCM Sailing Advances to Open Fleet Race Finals

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team moved on to the finals of the 2025 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Open Fleet Race National Championship Wednesday afternoon (May 28) with a fifth-place finish in the 18-team field Eastern Semifinals.
 
St. Mary's College was not only one of the 36 teams competing in this week's national championship, but the Seahawks are serving as hosts.
 
SMCM, who started the Open Fleet Race Nationals seeded 12th, tallied 141 points (combined score of Division A and Division B) over two days of semifinal competition, to lock up fifth place and a berth in Thursday and Friday's national championship field. Finals action will feature the Top 9 from the Western Semifinals and the Top 9 from the Eastern Semifinals.
 
The Top 9 from the Eastern Semifinals in order of finish are Harvard University (the defending champion), Brown University, U.S. Naval Academy, Tulane University, St. Mary's College, University of Rhode Island, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, George Washington University, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
 
The Top 9 from the Western Semifinals in order of finish are Stanford University, Yale University, Bowdoin College, Boston College, Dartmouth College, Georgetown University, College of Charleston, Tufts University, and University of Miami.
 
Senior skipper Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn) and senior crew Zoë Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) claimed fourth in Division A with 67 points. The senior duo collected five Top 5 finishes, including winning Races 6A and 10A. They also placed fourth in Races 3A and 7A while taking fifth in Race 9A.
 
In Division B, St. Mary's College finished eighth with 74 points, two points behind the seventh-place boat from Brown. Senior skipper Charlie Anderson (West River, Md./Key) and first-year crew Jane Wright (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard) sailed Races 5B through 10B, notching three Top 5 placements. The tandem posted a second-place finish in Race 10B while adding a fourth-place finish in Race 5B and a fifth-place finish in Race 7B.
 
The Seahawks have previously captured the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy as the Open Fleet Race National Champion three times (2000, 2002, and 2009).
