St. Mary’s College Open Sailing Repeats as MAISA Fall Open Fleet Race Champions

GENEVA, N.Y. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland open sailing team captured their second straight Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Fall Open Fleet Race Conference Championship title this weekend (Oct. 25-26) on Seneca Lake as Hobart and William Smith Colleges served as the host institution.
 
St. Mary's College posted a 16-point victory over second-place Georgetown University for its second consecutive MAISA Open Fleet crown. The Seahawks tallied 60 points while Georgetown notched 76 points, and the hosts finished third with 79 points.
 
The U.S. Naval Academy was in the top spot following six races in A Division and four in B Division on Saturday with 41 points while SMCM was in second with 47 points.
 
St. Mary's College tightened up its sailing on Sunday, notching just 13 points over six races (two in A and four in B) for its final score of 60. Navy struggled and fell to fourth place when all was said and done with 81 points.
 
Junior skipper Nathan Jensen (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and senior captain Brooke Bertrand (Costa Mesa, Calif./Orange Coast College) finished in a two-way tie for third in A Division with the hosts as both teams posted a score of 37. The Seahawks earned fourth in A Division as HWS owned the head-to-head tiebreaker. The duo collected six Top 5 finishes over their eight races.
 
In B Division, junior skipper Landon Cormie (Vineyard Haven, Mass./Falmouth Academy) and senior captain Emily Shioutakon (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) came in second-place finish with a score of 23 as Georgetown held the head-to-head tiebreaker to stake the first-place claim with 23 points as well. Cormie and Shioutakon recorded seven Top 4 finishes, including winning races 5B and 6B.
 
MAISA FALL WOMEN'S DINGHY
SMCM women's sailing team competed at the 15-team MAISA Fall Women's Dinghy Conference Championship hosted by Fordham University on the Long Island Sound. St. Mary's College placed eighth with a score of 209. Georgetown took home top honors with a low score of 68.
 
Junior skipper Lina Carper (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado) and first-year crew Molly Dowling (Harwood, Md./Southern) went ninth in A Division with a score of 121 with Fordham taking eighth with the head-to-head tiebreaker. Carper and Dowling recorded three Top 5 finishes over their 14 races.
 
Skippers Maisy Sperry '29 (Darthmouth HS) and Cho-Cho Williams '26 (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and senior crew Indiana Theurer (Virginia Beach, Va./Tidewater CC) finished sixth in B Division with a score of 88. Williams and Theurer won races 8B and 9B while notching four other Top 5 finishes.
