Fort Worth, Texas – The nationally-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team was one of the nation's 10-best match racing teams that reported to Fort Worth, Texas the weekend of November 16-18 to sail for the Cornelius Shields Trophy at the 2012 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Match Racing Nationals.
Sophomore Jacob LaDow (San Diego, Calif.) was the skipper for St. Mary's while seniors Victor Diaz de Leon (Lecheria, Venezuela) and Kayla McComb (Newport Beach, Calif.) and junior John Wallace (St. Petersburg, Fla.) served as crew. St. Mary's came in fourth place at ICSA Match Racing Nationals.
The championship racing took place at the Fort Worth Boat Club on the shores of Eagle Mountain Lake. Weather conditions were favorable with wind picking up throughout the weekend. The 10 teams raced in a round-robin format with a bottom four repechage to narrow the field from 10 to eight teams. The next stages were knockout rounds, with the victor winning the best-of-five. The finals and petit finals were shortened to the best-of-three due to time constraints. Races began on Friday and concluded on Sunday.
St. Mary's won the round-robin with a 7-2 record, winning a three-way tie with No. 8/11 Tufts University and No. 1/6 Georgetown University. The team beat the California Maritime Academy, 3-0, in the 1-4 quarterfinals. St. Mary's then lost to No. 1/3 Yale University, 3-1, in the semifinals followed by a 2-1 loss to Georgetown in the petit finals, putting the Seahawk in fourth-place overall for the regatta. St. Mary's sailed 19 total races throughout the weekend.
Tufts captured the Cornelius Shields Trophy while Yale and Georgetown finished second and third, respectively.
The ICSA Match Racing Nationals marks the conclusion of the fall season portion of the Seahawks' 2012-13 schedule. St. Mary's will resume action in February 2013.
