Bowie, Md. – Sixth-year head coach Derek Sabedra tied the former St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis coach, the late Paul Spencer, with 47 career women's tennis coaching victories as the Seahawks swept NCAA Division II Bowie State University, 9-0, on Saturday night at the Watkins Park Indoor Tennis Bubble.
Sabedra is now three wins away from his 50th career women's tennis victory as he owns a 47-49 record in six years at the helm of the St. Mary's women's tennis program.
St. Mary's (3-2) headed into singles action with a 3-0 lead after claiming wins in all three doubles matches, including an 8-0 shutout victory at No. 3 doubles by junior Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson).
The first singles win was produced by sophomore Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) as Gaul posted a straight set victory at No. 1 singles, never dropping a single game.
It became a 6-0 Seahawk lead after senior Sarah Minkoff (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles and junior Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) followed suit with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 singles.
First-year Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) notched her third straight victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles for a 7-0 advantage.
First-year Melissa Bowman (Derwood, Md./Magruder) continued the St. Mary's winning with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles while first-year Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) closed out the match win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, February 25 when St. Mary's travels to Virginia to take on Division II Virginia Union University at 1:00 pm followed by a 4:00 pm match at Randolph-Macon College.
