Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland president, Dr. Joseph Urgo, threw out the ceremonial first pitch Saturday afternoon, helping the Seahawks kick off the home portion of their 2012 schedule against the City College of New York Beavers. St. Mary's improved to 2-1 on the young season, claiming both games in today's non-conference doubleheader by 6-1 and 5-4 (8 innings) decisions.
Senior starter Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) notched the victory in the first game as Jerrard (1-0) fanned a career-high eight batters while only walking one CCNY batter in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed just one run on five hits.
St. Mary's exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to its 6-1 victory. Senior John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) connected on an one-out, two-RBI single to left center to bring home junior Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) and sophomore Alex Lenovitz (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall) for a 2-1 Seahawk lead.
Stewart then scored following junior Corey Napier's (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) single to leftfield and an error by CCNY leftfielder, Chris Jimenez, for a two-run advantage. First-year Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) drove in the last run of the third inning with a two-out RBI double down the leftfield line.
The Seahawks sealed the win with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Napier and junior Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) paced the team at the plate with two hits apiece as St. Mary's collected six runs on 10 hits.
Stewart registered a walk-off single to left field in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Seahawks to a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Stewart's game-winning hit was setup by consecutive wild pitches after Muscatelli drew a lead-off walk.
After playing five innings at third base, senior Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) made the move to pitching mound and secured the win as Johnson gave up just one hit, struck out one and walked two in 3.0 IP.
Stewart and Napier tallied two hits each while senior Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) hit the Seahawks' only extra-base hit of the second game.
The Seahawks hope to complete their three-game series with CCNY tomorrow at 11:00 am. However, please check the Seahawk athletic website (http://www.smcmathletics.com) for any game changes as tomorrow's forecast calls for a 90% chance of rain/snow mix.
