Hilton Head, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a 4-0 record as the Seahawks notched their fourth shutout victory of the season with a 9-0 sweep of Messiah College Friday morning.
This morning's win is the ninth consecutive victory for St. Mary's after opening up the 2011-12 season with a 7-2 loss to Catholic University of America on September 10, 2011.
The doubles tandem of junior Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and sophomore Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) improved to 8-1 on the season with their eighth consecutive victory as the duo posted an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
The duo of senior captain Thomas Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and junior Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) moved to 9-2 on the season with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Doubles partners, sophomores John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond), wrapped up doubles action and a 3-0 Seahawk lead with an 8-6 triumph at the third doubles spot for their seventh consecutive win, improve to 7-1 on the season.
St. Mary's (9-1) systematically captured the singles matches, starting at No. 1 and moving all the way down to No. 6.
Gear began the winning with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles for his team-leading 12th singles victory and 12-2 season record.
Wong was next with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 followed by Hoesman's 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles to become the third Seahawk with double-digit wins this season, improving to 10-3 on the year.
Feeley continued St. Mary's dominance with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles before Feighner became the fourth Seahawk in double-digit wins as he posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles to move to 10-2 on the season.
Guzzone outlasted Messiah's junior Derrek Hoffer (York, Pa./Central York) for a thrilling 7-6 (11-9), 6-1 win at the sixth spot, improving his mark to 11-2 thus far.
The Seahawks will be idle for a week before traveling to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to take on Lancaster Bible College in non-conference action at 3:30 pm on Friday, March 23.
