Frederick, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team rebounded from Thursday's loss at Goucher College with a 6-3 Capital Athletic Conference triumph over host Hood College Saturday afternoon in the conference opener for the Seahawks.
Hood (4-9, 0-3) went up 2-0 in the match as the Blazers claimed victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles flights. The Seahawks cut the lead to 2-1 as the tandem of junior Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) notched an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles to improve to 5-0 on the season.
St. Mary's (8-3) then staked a 3-2 lead as junior Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and senior Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) each tallied straight set wins at No. 6 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
The Blazers tied the match up at 3-3 as junior Emily Maerz (Myersville, Md./Middletown) defeated sophomore Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) in straight sets at No. 1 singles.
Sophomore Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) broke the draw with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over senior Emily Schrodel (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) at No. 3 singles.
Stumpfig picked up the decisive fifth point at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over senior Casey Miller (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights).
First-year Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) wrapped up the match for the Seahawks with her three-set victory over first-year Sandra Dziadas (Long Pond, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
The Seahawks will be busy on Sunday, April 1 as St. Mary's takes on Frostburg State University at 9:30 am in a league match followed by a non-conference match against NCAA Division II Davis & Elkins College at 12:30 pm. Both matches will take place in Frostburg, Maryland.
