Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team finished off the weekend with two more wins to post a 3-0 record between matches on Saturday and Sunday. The Seahawks tallied an 8-1 Capital Athletic Conference win at Frostburg State University Sunday morning before collecting a 7-2 victory over NCAA Division II Davis & Elkins College.
St. Mary's (10-3, 2-0 CAC) staked a 2-0 lead after claiming wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Frostburg State (2-6, 0-2 CAC) cut the lead to one by collecting an 8-6 triumph at the No. 1 flight before heading into singles action.
The Seahawks then rolled through singles play as sophomore Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) and first-year Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) started the winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights, respectively.
St. Mary's won all but one singles match in straight sets as sophomore Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) needed three sets to get past sophomore Amber Beckman (Cumberland, Md./Allegheny) at No. 3 singles.
The Seahawks started their match with Davis & Elkins (5-13) almost the same way they did against Frostburg, capturing the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles flights but also claiming a win at No. 6 singles for a 3-0 lead. The D&E Senators responded with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles to cut the lead to 3-1.
Senior Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and first-year Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) then collected straight set victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to increase St. Mary's advantage to 5-1 before D&E picking up a win at No. 1 singles.
Stine gutted out another win at No. 3 singles, handing junior Becky Price (Camden, N.Y./Nazareth College) a 7-5, 7-5 setback.
The Seahawks will be back in action with two matches on Wednesday, April 4. St. Mary's will first take on Wesley College in a conference match in Dover, Delaware at 2:30 pm before traveling a few miles down the road from Wesley to face NCAA Division I Delaware State University at 5:30 pm.
