Seahawk Baseball Eliminated from CAC Tournament

Box Score

Salisbury, Md. – The sixth-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team endured a heartbreaking 12-11 loss to fifth-seeded Stevenson University Friday morning in the second round of the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament, ending the Seahawks' tournament run.

Stevenson (19-18-2) notched the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out on the scoreboard.  After a lead-off ground out to second base, senior Zac Stavish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) singled to the left side followed by senior Tony Prescott's (Elkridge, Md./Howard) up the middle.  With runners on first and third, junior Mitch Berman (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) stepped up to the plate and cracked a single to right center to score first-year Michael Vitcavich (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) who pinch ran for Stavish.

The two teams combined for 37 hits and eight errors as St. Mary's (15-19) scored 11 runs on 17 hits while committing five errors.

Seniors Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) and John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis), junior Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and first-year Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) paced the Seahawks at the plate with three hits each.  Napier collected three RBI while Stewart scored three runs.

Sophomore LHP Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) was saddled with the loss after pitching 5.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with two strikeouts.

Stevenson rolled out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings before St. Mary's finally got on the scoreboard in the top of third as Stewart came home on a Mustang error in the outfield.  The Mustangs then stretched their lead to 10-1 with three runs in the fourth inning.

The Seahawks picked up a second run in the fifth inning as Nadolny's double to centerfield brought Stewart home.  Stevenson claimed an 11-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth before St. Mary's exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 11-7.  Napier powered the scoring outburst with a three-run double down the leftfield line.

St. Mary's continued its rally in the top of the seventh inning with four more runs to knot the contest up at 11-11.  Senior Eric Gronbeck (Owings, Md./Northern) connected on the game-tying two-out single to leftfield, allowing Nadolny to cross home plate for the equalizer.  A foul out to third base halted the Seahawks' rally.

During St. Mary's 9-0 run, the Stevenson bats were quiet for three straight innings before awakening in the ninth.
