Salisbury, Md. – The third-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team bowed out of the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament in the semifinals Monday afternoon, dropping a 9-0 decision to second-seeded Salisbury University.
St. Mary's (15-7) took 15 games from regionally-ranked Salisbury (11-9) yesterday. The Sea Gulls are ranked 16th in the Atlantic South region.
The tandem of junior Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) took two games from junior Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and first-year Katie Youlios (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) in an 8-2 loss at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Alexa Gaul (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) claimed four game victories in her match against Iosue, suffering a 6-2, 6-2 loss at No. 1 singles.
First-year Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) also captured four games in a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Youlios at No. 3 singles.
Junior Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) won three in her 6-1, 6-2 loss to junior Victoria Handlin (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck).
The Seahawks have one more tennis match left before the 2011-12 campaign officially comes to a close. St. Mary's will travel to Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 28 for a match at 1:30 pm against Bryn Athyn College.
