Frederick, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team started the 2012-13 campaign with a 7-2 win over former Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Hood College, Friday afternoon.
The Seahawk win dampened the dedication ceremonies for Hood's new Tennis Complex. This afternoon's match was the first ever played on the new courts. The victory also marked first-year head coach Drew Miller's first victory at the helm of the Seahawk women's tennis program.
Sophomore Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory over first-year Olivia Hosch (Exeter, R.I.) at No. 2 singles while teaming up with first-year Emily Rost (Germantown, Md.) for an 8-0 victory over sophomore Sandra Dziadas (Long Pond, Pa.) and first-year Aubrey Fetters (Frostburg, Md.) at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dziadas at No. 3 singles while E. Rost posted a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over senior Nalla Tejera (Hialeah, Fla.) at fourth singles.
Junior Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over junior Mabie Tun (Frederick, Md.) at No. 5 singles while senior Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Fetters at the sixth flight. Bradcovich garnered a triumph as well at No. 3 doubles with first-year Anna Passaniti (White Hall, Md./Hereford), defeating the tandem of Tun and Tejera.
Hood (0-1) avoided the shutout as senior Emily Maerz (Myersville, Md.) collected a 6-2, 6-2 win over sophomore Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) at No. 1 singles while Maerz teamed up with Hosch for an 8-2 victory over Ramsey and Stumpfig at No. 1 doubles.
The Seahawks (1-0) will return to action on Tuesday, September 18 as St. Mary's travels to Washington, D.C. to face Division II University of the District of Columbia at 3:00 pm.
