St. Mary's City, Md. – The nationally-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team continued their strong performances this weekend at Old Dominion University, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and at Horseshoe Bend.
The team's second-place finish at the MAISA Women's Fall Championship – held at St. Mary's – qualified the Seahawks for the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship on November 10-11 at Connecticut College. St. Mary's fourth-place finish at South #1 Qualifier at Old Dominion secured a spot in the War Memorial at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to compete for the MAISA Coed Conference Championship on October 27-28.
At the MAISA Women's Championship, seniors Mimi Roller (St. John, V.I.) and Katie Gluskin (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Seahawks in A Division while senior Kayla McComb (Newport Beach, Calif.) and junior Nicole DeAngeli (Reno, Nev.) sailed B Division. Strong results Saturday allowed the Seahawks to sub in some younger sailors on Sunday – sophomore Catherine Shanahan (Tierra Verde, Fla.) and first-year Morgan Bench (Chestertown, Md.) in A Division while first-year Marissa Golison (Long Beach, Calif.) and senior Allie Smith (Pembroke, Mass.) handled B Division.
St. Mary's placed fifth in A Division and first in B Division while finishing second to the U.S. Naval Academy in the overall team standings.
At the South #1 Qualifying Regatta at Old Dominion, St. Mary's A Division team took third place with senior Victor Diaz de Leon (Lecheria, Venezuela) and first-year Mariah Leffingwell (Easton, Md.) sailing well in the shifty conditions. First-year Alexander Curtiss (Lake Forest, Ill.) with crews, senior Nina-Mercedes Rabin (Branford, Conn.) and sophomore John Boot (Baltimore, Md.) took third in B Division. The competition amongst the top four teams was very close throughout the weekend with St. Mary's finishing in fourth place overall.
At the Danmark Trophy Inter-conference Regatta at the Coast guard Academy, the Seahawks placed fourth in a 20-team field. The Seahawks were led by a second-place performance in A Division by juniors Joshua Greenslade (Smiths, Bermuda) and Kelley Merryman (Severna Park, Md.). In B Division, junior Ian Liberty (Colts Neck, N.J.) and senior Ainsley Thomson (Princeton, N.J.) finished in eighth place. This result should boost the Seahawks in the national rankings.
St. Mary's will be back in action at several regattas on October 6-7. The team will be split between the Navy Fall Intersectional in Annapolis; the Moody Trophy at University of Rhode Island; the Carl Van Duyne (MAISA Singlehandeds) in Annapolis as well; the South #2 (Tom Curtis) at Georgetown University; and the Hobart College Fall Intersectional.
