Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – It came down to the last basket between the No. 9 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team and the University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon. The Eagles posted a 66-64 Capital Athletics Conference home win over St. Mary's behind a three-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation.
Senior guard Bradley Riester (Richmond, Va.) lifted Mary Washington (7-1, 3-0 CAC) to the win as Riester drained his fifth three-pointer of the day with seven ticks on the clock off an assist by senior guard Dom Morra (Burke, Va.).
After an Eagle timeout, the Seahawks (5-3, 2-1 CAC) moved the ball up the court and senior forward Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) put up a long-range shot that was blocked by senior guard Dajon Daniel (Fredericksburg, Va.) as time expired. The loss marks the first time since January 2012 that St. Mary's has suffered consecutive losses.
Junior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) tallied a game-best 22 points, three assists, and two steals while sophomore forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) notched a career-best 16 points. First-year guard Gavan Scanlan (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) came off the bench to chip in season-highs of 11 points, three three-pointers, and two assists.
LaGuerre helped the Seahawks edge Mary Washington, 33-32, in rebounding as he pulled down a career-best nine boards while senior captain Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) matched his season-high with six caroms.
The game was tied three times while the lead changed on four occasions. St. Mary's never owned a lead in the first half as the Seahawks headed into the locker room down 33-27 at halftime. Riester paced the Eagles with 11 first-half points while Scanlan scored all of his season-best 11 points for the Seahawks in the first 20 minutes.
The second half was all about runs. LaGuerre sparked a 12-7 Seahawk run at the start of the second stanza with a dunk at 19:32 and then pulled the team within one with a shot from downtown at 15:49. St. Mary's continued to claw at the Eagles' hold on the lead, outscoring the hosts 17-13 over the next eight minutes for its first lead of the afternoon, 56-53, at 7:35 on back-to-back three-pointers by McFall and LaGuerre.
Hill stretched the lead to eight for the Seahawks with a layup at 4:06. UMW then used a 9-0 run to regain a one-point advantage with 50 seconds remaining on a Morra layup. Morra then sent LaGuerre to the line where LaGuerre proceeded to knock down both shots for a 64-63 SMCM lead at 00:12.
Riester finished the day with 17 points while senior forward Dylan Farinet (Westmoreland, Va.) and junior guard Taylor Johnson (Ashburn, Va.) each contributed 13. Morra added a dozen while Farinet grabbed nine rebounds.
The Seahawks will look to put an end to their skid in the Caribbean as St. Mary's competes in the Puerto Rico Division III Classic on December 21 and 23. The Seahawks will open up action against Susquehanna University on the 21st.
