Box Score Middletown, Pa. – Senior forward Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) dropped in the game-winning basket at the buzzer to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to their first win of the 2013-14 campaign. The Seahawks posted a 64-62 Capital Athletic Conference victory over league newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, Saturday afternoon.
First-year guard Rebecca Bailey (Tobyhanna, Pa.) finished off a layup, knotting the contest at 62-62 with five seconds left in the regulation. St. Mary's (1-5, 1-1 CAC) called timeout first after Bailey's bucket to discuss the game plan then the Lions used a timeout of their own. Senior guard Aura Payne (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) fed the ball to Pruden for the game-winning shot.
Pruden finished the game with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds while senior forward Marché Pearson's (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) added 17 points and five boards. Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) chipped in a dozen points, four caroms, a career-best four assists, and a season-high two steals.
The Seahawks opened up with a 7-2 advantage before Harrisburg (3-5, 0-2 CAC) went on a 25-10 run over a nearly 11-minute span to own a 10-point margin at 7:49 as first-year guard Molly Burke (Dunmore, Pa.) drilled a three-point shot to cap the run. Sophomore guard Jasmine Yanich (Harrisburg, Pa.) maintained the 10-point Lion lead with a layup at 6:12. St. Mary's closed out the final six minutes on a 10-4 run to only be down 33-29 at halftime.
Pruden paced the Seahawks at intermission with eight points as the team shot 37.1% (13-of-35) from the field, hauled in 16 rebounds and committed 10 turnovers. First-year Kaitlyn Carmo (Palmyra, Pa.) led all players with nine points as the Lions shot 40.0% (12-of-30) from the floor, pulled down 16 boards, and had 12 miscues.
The second stanza featured six tied scores as neither team was able to go beyond a five-point lead throughout the final 20 minutes. St. Mary's kept pace with the Lions in the second half by shooting 50% (15-of-30) from the floor and making only 11 turnovers to PSH's 16.
Payne dished a career- and game-best nine assists while adding five points, three steals and two rebounds. Carmo finished as the Lions' leading scorer with 17 points while sophomore forward Kiara Carter (Bronx, N.Y.) grabbed a game-best 10 boards to help Harrisburg own a 35-28 rebounding margin.
The six-game road trip continues for the Seahawks next Saturday, December 14th as St. Mary's travels to conference foe University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia for a CAC contest at 1:00 pm.
