Box Score Brooklandville, Md. - Sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) picked up his first hat trick of the season as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team dropped a 19-5 decision to No. 8 Dickinson College Saturday afternoon on neutral ground.
Tarrant paced the Seahawks with his three goals, including two in the fourth quarter, while senior midfielder Taylor Cook (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) found the back of the net twice.
Dickinson (2-0) drew first blood but St. Mary's (1-1) gained a 2-1 advantage at 9:58. The Red Devils then scored five straight to hold a 6-2 lead at the start of the second quarter.
Cook stopped the DC run with his second of the day just 57 seconds into the second period. Three consecutive Red Devil goals gave Dickinson a 9-3 advantage at halftime.
First-year attackman Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa.) paced the Dickinson offense with four goals and an assist while fellow classmate Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass.) also put in four scores.
The Dickinson defense kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard in the third stanza while the Red Devils tallied six unanswered goals. DC extended its scoring run to seven straight at the start of the fourth before Tarrant found the back of the net twice in a span of 1:14. Junior attackman Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn.) netted two of the Red Devils' final three goals.
Senior midfielder Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) led the Seahawks at face-off X with an 8-of-15 effort and four loose ball pickups while defensemen Tripp Trainor (Severn, Md./Gilman) and Justin Harty (Medford Lakes, N.J./Camden Catholic) collected five ground balls and three caused turnovers, respectively.
First-year Joey Casey (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) started in goal for the Seahawks but was relieved after 25 minutes by junior Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights), who made four stops in 20 minutes of action. Senior Ben Wheeler (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) came up with one save in the final quarter.
Senior Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, Pa.) turned away four shots and scooped up three loose balls in 53 minutes for Dickinson.
The Seahawks hope to get back in the win column next Saturday, March 2 when St. Mary's travels to Madison, N.J. to face Drew University in non-conference action at 12:00 p.m.
