Newport News, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team saw their two-match win streak come to an end Sunday afternoon, dropping a 9-0 decision to future Capital Athletic Conference member, Christopher Newport University, who is ranked 17th in the Atlantic South region.
Junior Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and sophomore Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) battled at No. 2 doubles, suffering a 9-7 setback to the duo of senior Melisande Downs (New Kent, Va.) and junior Jodi Noland (Berryville, Va.).
Sophomore Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) faced a tough opponent in senior Marion Gloor (Niederlenz, Switzerland) at No. 2 singles but Stumpfig took four sets before falling 6-3, 6-1.
Stine also notched four set wins as she dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Downs at No. 4 singles.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, March 2 when St. Mary's welcomes Bridgewater (Va.) College to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 1:00 pm.
