Box Score Baltimore, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team fell behind early in succumbing to an 11-6 loss to No. 12 Denison University Wednesday afternoon. The game was played on Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
Senior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) paced the St. Mary's (2-4) offense with four points on a goal and three assists while junior midfielder Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) contributed with a pair of scores.
Denison (3-1) opened up the game with five straight goals before sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) finally put the Seahawks on the board with his team-leading 10th goal of the season, cutting the deficit to four with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter.
St. Mary's (2-3) extended its scoring streak into the second period as Mull dished out his team-best 13th assist to junior captain Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) for a 5-2 Big Red lead at 11:16. Love closed the gap to two with an unassisted goal at 8:56. Denison responded with two goals in a span of one minute and 35 seconds, including a man-up goal, to head into halftime with a 7-4 advantage following Mull's goal at 3:16.
Junior attackman Eddie Vita (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) paced the Big Red with four goals and an assist while sophomore midfielder Matt King (Glen Rock, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) handed out three assists.
Denison scored the only two goals of the third period and then rolled its scoring run into the last stanza with two more tallies, extending its lead to the biggest of the game – 11-4 at 7:24. The Seahawks notched the final two goals of the game as Love and senior attackman Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) found the back of the net in the final 3:30 of the contest.
Senior midfielder Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) led the Seahawks with four ground balls while Tarrant and junior midfielder Cody Tidwell (Cordova, Md./South River) each added three loose ball pickups.
In his first game action of his career, senior goalkeeper Scott Marsh (Crofton, Md./South River) picked up 13 saves and only allowed four goals in the final 34 minutes of the game. First-year Chris Thomas (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) needed just four stops in recording the win for Denison.
The Seahawks will look to turn around their three-game skid this Sunday, March 17 when St. Mary's travels to Delaware, Ohio to face Ohio Wesleyan University in non-conference action at 12:00 pm.
