St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Wins CAC Opener at Marymount (Va.) Behind Love's Career Night

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Junior midfielder Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) found the back of the net a career-high five times as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team posted their second consecutive win with an 11-5 road win at Marymount (Va.) University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night.

Love put up his career-best five goals while sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) tallied two goals and an assist and senior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) chipped in a goal and two helpers.

St. Mary's (4-4, 1-0 CAC) dominated the first period, outscoring Marymount by a 5-0 margin as the Seahawks posted a 13-3 advantage in shots. Love scored twice in the first quarter while Mull picked up his two assists.

Love's third goal of the game was sandwiched between a pair of Saint scores as Marymount finally got on the scoreboard, closing the gap to 6-2 at halftime. Junior midfielder Lance Bernecker (Chambersburg, Pa.) was Marymount's leading scorer with two goals and an assist while fellow classmate Garrett Nealon (Springfield, Va.) had two assists.

Marymount (4-2, 0-1 CAC) extended its scoring streak to three straight as the Saints came out of intermission firing. Bernecker scored twice in under a three-minute span to bring his team within two at 8:54 of the third stanza. Love ended the Seahawks' scoring drought with his fourth of the night at 7:05. Marymount stayed within two goals as junior attackman Vince Lodato (Tampa, Fla.) answered 17 seconds later. The Saints outshot St. Mary's, 14-3, in the third.

St. Mary's regrouped in-between the third and fourth periods, rattling off four straight and keeping the Saints off the scoreboard for the rest of the game and the 11-5 final.

The trio of seniors Justin Harty (Medford Lakes, N.J./Camden Catholic), Dalton Yohn (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) and Scott Marsh (Crofton, Md./South River) anchored a solid Seahawk defense that shutout Marymount in two quarters. Harty led the way with three caused turnovers while Yohn and Marsh combined for 11 ground ball pickups.

Marsh registered 12 stops for his third straight game with 10-plus saves while Marymount's junior Derek DiGiovanni (Midlothian, Va.) had 10 saves in the loss.

The Seahawks will look to make it three in a row as St. Mary's hosts future CAC member, Christopher Newport University, this Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium.
