St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team moved to seven straight wins Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 non-conference victory over the Goucher College Gophers.
Senior captain Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and first-year Anna Passaniti (White Hall, Md./Hereford) gave the Seahawks (10-7) a 1-0 lead with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) doubled their team's lead with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Goucher (8-3) finally got on the board as junior Hanora Baron (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and first-year Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles over senior captain Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and first-year Emily Rost (Germantown, Md.) to cut the lead to 2-1 before singles play.
The Seahawks notched a 5-1 advantage as L. Rost, Passaniti, and Stumpfig all picked up singles wins. Passaniti and Stumpfig are now riding a six-match win streak while Stumpfig owns a team-best 10 singles wins this season.
Cianci tallied the Gophers second and final point of the match at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over E. Rost.
Sophomore Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Rau finished out the win for the Seahawks with triumphs at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Rau improved to 6-0 on the season with Wednesday's victory while Ramsey extended her win streak to five straight.
St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, April 6 when the Seahawks welcome Frostburg State University to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a Capital Athletic Conference match at 2:00 pm.
