St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) registered his 50th singles victory in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team to an 8-1 Capital Athletic Conference triumph over Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. Today's win marked the first league victory for the Seahawks this season.
Gear, who is already the program's all-time singles wins leader, used a 6-0, 6-2 win over senior Aaron Littlejohn (Severna Park, Md.) at No. 1 singles to improve to 50-11 in his three-year career. Last season, he claimed the singles wins record, surpassing the old mark of 38 set by Jason Whiteman '99.
The Seahawks (9-5, 1-1 CAC) rolled to their sixth consecutive win as St. Mary's staked a 2-0 lead after claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Frostburg State (1-10, 1-3 CAC) avoided being shutout as junior Zawdie Coke (Kingston, Jamaica) and first-year Teron Tyre (Showell, Md.) battled senior Chip Compton (Havre de Grace, Md./Tome) and first-year Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) for a 9-8 (7-5) triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Junior J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond), Gear, and first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) stretched St. Mary's lead to 5-1 by capturing the No. 3, No. 1, and No. 2 singles matches.
After Bishop and first-year Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) collected straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 4 singles, respectively, Compton sealed the win for the Seahawks with his second career singles win. He posted a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 triumph over Coke at No. 6 singles.
The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow when St. Mary's travels to York College of Pennsylvania for a Capital Athletic Conference match at 1:00 pm.
