St. Petersburg, Fla. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team took second place at the ICSA/APS Team Race National Championship that completed on Monday, May 27, following three days of racing (Saturday, May 25 - Monday, May 27) on Tampa Bay out of the Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove. The 14 teams that started the national championships were in contention for the prestigious Walter C. Wood Trophy.
Following six races in the final four, Yale University took the trophy with a record of 18-5 followed by St. Mary's College (16-7), Brown University (14-9) and Georgetown University (14-9). St. Mary's was the only Division III school in the top five in this event. This is St. Mary's second year in a row placing second at the championships.
"The team race championships are nothing short of a grind," said Adam Werblow, St. Mary's College head coach. "Only part of our team is here in Florida to represent our school, but the players recognize every time they step in a boat at these championships that they are representing everyone who practices against them every day at home and do so with pride."
St. Mary's team members included Jacob La Dow '15 (San Diego, Calif.) and Ainsley Thomson '13 (Princeton, N.J.), Fletcher Sims '14 (Annapolis, Md.) with Mimi Roller '13 (Coral Bay, St. John, Virgin Islands) and Kelley Merryman '14 (Severna Park, Md.), Joshua Greenslade '14 (Smiths, Bermuda) and Kayla McComb '13 (Newport Beach, Calif.) and John Wallace '14 (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Katie Gluskin '13 (Duxbury, Mass.).
"We capped off our season with a week-long training session with the Naval Academy and they really pushed us to perform under pressure," Werblow continued. "Our dedicated alumni even flew in from around the globe, in some cases, to help us train. It is hard to imagine that we could have reached the podium without them."
