Seahawk Field Hockey Nips Bridgewater, 3-2, in 300th Game

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team celebrated the program's 300th game with a win as first-year Carly Todd (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield) lifted the Seahawks to a 3-2 double overtime victory over Bridgewater (Va.) College Saturday afternoon.

After collecting the ball about 30 yards, Todd dribbled down the center of the field, beat one Bridgewater defender and then took on senior goalkeeper Jessica Balsano (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown). Balsano dove to her right, taking the ball off Todd's stick. Todd corralled the loose ball and reverse-swept the ball into the far right corner with 6:51 left in the second extra period.

St. Mary's (2-2) and Bridgewater (3-1) have now played four consecutive one-goal contests with three being decided in overtime. This is the Seahawks' second straight win over Bridgewater as last season St. Mary's posted a 1-0 win following a shootout.

Playing its 20th season in 2013, field hockey gained varsity status at St. Mary's in 1994. The Seahawks have collected six winning campaigns thus far, including a single-season record 12 wins in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Sixth-year head coach Katie Lange '06 has been part of 156 games at St. Mary's as a player (2002-05) and coach, leading the Seahawks to an overall 81-75 record in 10 years.

First-year forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) put the Seahawks on the board first at 9:15 as Wolf collected junior captain Olivia Edwards' (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) pass at the far left post and slipped it behind the Bridgewater defense.

The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime as senior forward Colleen Dickson (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) tapped in a loose ball at 23:37, which came off junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop's (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) hand save.

The Eagles then staked a 2-1 advantage at 55:23 as junior midfielder Caroline Augsburger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) converted a penalty stroke. However, less than five minutes later, senior captain Claire Kortyna's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) first goal of the season knotted the game at 2-2 as sophomore forward Emily Bishop (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) assisted on the play.

St. Mary's controlled the offensive categories with an 18-7 shot advantage and a 13-3 penalty corner. In the first half, the Seahawks owned a 10-1 margin in shots and an 8-0 edge in corners.

Bishop posted four saves in the Seahawk win while Balsano finished with five.

St. Mary's will be back in action next Saturday, September 21st at 1:00 pm, hosting Stevenson University at Seahawk Stadium.
