No. 16 St. Mary's Men's Basketball Eases to Sixth Straight Win

Box Score

York, Pa. – Sophomore forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) poured in a career-best 22 points in leading the No. 16 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team to their sixth consecutive win with a 69-51 Capital Athletic Conference victory at York College of Pennsylvania.

Joining Spurrier in double-digit scoring was senior captain Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) who tallied 15 points and grabbed a season-best seven rebounds. Junior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) added 12 points, a game-high seven boards, a career-best five steals, and four assists while fellow team captain Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) chipped in 11 points, a game-high seven caroms, and career-highs of six assists and four blocks.

First-year forward Dalton Myers' (Finksburg, Md.) three-pointer at 18:39 of the first half was the only time that York (2-12, 1-6 CAC) held a lead the entire game. The Seahawks (11-3, 5-1 CAC) never trailed from that point on the merits of a 16-6 run to own an 18-9 advantage with 10 minutes to go in the half. A Spurrier layup with 43 ticks on the clock sent St. Mary's into halftime with a 31-23 lead.

Spurrier collected a dozen of his 22 points in the first half to lead all scorers while McFall (6 rebounds) and LaGuerre combined for 11 boards to give the Seahawks a 23-12 rebounding in the first 20 minutes. Myers paced the Spartans with seven first-half points.

A three-point play by LaGuerre at the start of the second stanza stretched the SMCM lead to 11 before York closed the gap to 49-44 at 9:20 behind a 26-10 run capped by a long-range shot by first-year guard Ryan Beaver (Harrisburg, Pa.). The Spartans would advance no closer as St. Mary's responded with a 25-2 run to close out the game and finished shooting 60.9% (14-of-23) over the final 20 minutes.

Senior guard Mike Mathews (Newark, Del.) was the only York player in double digits as Mathews scored 12 points while senior forward Matt McNeely (Bel Air, Md.) contributed nine points and a game-best seven rebounds.

St. Mary's will look to keep the win streak alive on Saturday, January 18th when the Seahawks welcome No. 14 Wesley College (12-1, 5-1 CAC) to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another league matchup at 4:00 p.m.
