No. 16 St. Mary's Men's Basketball Edged by No. 14 Wesley

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The rivalry between the No. 16 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team and No. 14 Wesley College is stronger than ever as evidenced by this afternoon's Capital Athletic Conference matchup which was decided in the last 50 seconds of the game.

Wesley (13-1, 6-1 CAC) held on for the 75-72 conference win and sole possession of second place in the CAC standings as senior center David Langan (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) notched the final four Wolverine points. The Wolverines extend their win streak to eight while halting St. Mary's at six.

Today's Wolverine victory marks the first time that Wesley has won on the Seahawks' home court since joining the conference in 2007-08. St. Mary's now (11-4, 5-2 CAC) owns a 10-1 record against the Wolverines at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.

Sophomore forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) finished as the team's leading scorer for the second consecutive game with a game-high 18 points while senior captain Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) added a dozen points. Captains Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) and Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) both contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

The Seahawks rallied from a seven-point second-half deficit by outscoring Wesley, 28-20, over a 13-minute span to claim its first lead, 58-57, since the 4:51 mark of the first stanza. The two sides then traded leads until an 11-3 run gave the Wolverines a 71-64 advantage with 1:40 remaining.

Following a 4-for-4 effort by McFall at the free throw line, three defensive stops, and an old-fashioned three-point play by Spurrier, the game was knotted at 71-71 with 50 seconds left in regulation. The Seahawks were down three but had one more possession with 16 ticks on the clock; however, McFall's three-point attempt fell short at the buzzer.

Langan and sophomore guard Anthony Bowers (Wilmington, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) each tallied 18 points to pace Wesley in the win while junior Quincy Pettiford (Portsmouth, Va./Concord [Del.]) chipped in 14 points and a game-high seven boards.

LaGuerre hit a long-range shot at 15:47 of the first half to give St. Mary's its biggest lead of the game, 13-4. The Wolverines responded with a 21-11 to claim their first lead of the contest at 4:15 and headed into the locker room with a 35-30 advantage at halftime as Langan led all scorers with 12 points.

St. Mary's will look to get back in the win column next Wednesday, January 22nd when the Seahawks welcome league newcomer, Christopher Newport University (11-4, 4-3 CAC), to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another league matchup at 8:00 p.m.
