Seahawk Women's Basketball Falls Short at Marymount (Va.)

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team dropped their second Capital Athletic Conference matchup with Marymount (Va.) University, suffering a 61-49 setback on the Saints' home court Saturday afternoon.

Marymount (11-6, 7-2 CAC) sweeps the series with the Seahawks (6-9, 3-5 CAC) as the Saints claimed a 59-55 victory three weeks ago at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.

Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) notched a team-best 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting while junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) contributed 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the downtown. Senior forward Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) grabbed a team-best seven caroms along with seven points, three assists, and two steals.

St. Mary's played a solid game in the first half and headed into the locker room in a 27-27 dead heat with the Saints. The Seahawks held the biggest lead of the half, owning a 19-15 advantage at 7:10 behind four points from senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) in a 7-0 run. Marymount reclaimed a 24-21 lead at 2:25 with a 9-2 run of its own.

Six straight points put the Seahawks back on top before sophomore guard Kievanna Lacey (Morrisville, Pa.) completed an old-fashioned three-point play in the final two seconds to knot the game up for the fourth time. Pruden paced St. Mary's with six points while senior guard Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown, Md.) led all scorers with nine points.

The Saints used a 10-3 run at the start of the second half to stake a seven-point lead but St. Mary's responded with a 10-4 run to cut the lead to one at 11:37 on a Pearson layup. The Seahawks would get no closer as second chance points and points off turnovers proved to be the difference in the second half.

Marymount tallied 19 points off 15 Seahawk miscues while picking up 13 second chance points as the Saints dominated the boards, 14-7, on their offensive end. St. Mary's was limited to just four second chance points as MU posted a 12-3 rebounding margin on the defensive end.

Fischer finished the afternoon with a game-best 18 points while sophomore center Miranda Krott (Temple, Pa.) recorded a double-double with 15 points and game-best 13 rebounds.

The Seahawks will begin a four-game home stand on Monday, January 27th when St. Mary's welcomes league newcomer, No. 16 Christopher Newport University (14-2, 6-1 CAC), to its home court for another conference tilt at 6:00 p.m.
