Box Score Arlington, Va. – The No. 24 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team notched their first Capital Athletic Conference series sweep of the season Saturday afternoon with a 52-49 victory over host Marymount (Va.) University.
Senior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) sealed the St. Mary's win with his fourth three-pointer of the day with 11 seconds remaining in regulation. LaGuerre's long-range shot kept the Seahawks (12-4, 6-2 CAC) in sole possession of third place in the CAC standings and gave ninth-year head coach Chris Harney his 175th career win. Harney, the school's all-time wins leader, now holds a 175-70 career record.
LaGuerre paced St. Mary's in the win with 14 points and two assists while sophomore forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) added 10 points and a career-best nine rebounds.
Marymount (12-5, 5-4 CAC) jumped out to a 7-2 lead at 17:19 behind five points by senior forward Reed Scott (Ellicott City, Md.). That would be the Saints' largest advantage of the entire game as St. Mary's claimed the lead for good by outscoring MU, 18-11, over the next 15 minutes. The Seahawks scored five of the half's final seven points in a two-minute span for a 23-20 halftime margin.
Spurrier paced the Seahawks with eight points while Scott paced all scorers at intermission with nine points and six boards.
The Seahawks opened up the second stanza with a 14-5 run to boast their biggest lead (12 points) of the contest at 15:31. Marymount cut it down to four on a layup by junior forward JC Hoellich (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) three minutes later. St. Mary's worked to build back a double-digit, owning its last double-digit margin, 49-39, at 4:48 following a LaGuerre three.
St. Mary's went 0-for-4 from the field and committed two turnovers while the Saints went 6-for-6 from the line in a 4:05 span to knot the game at 49-49 with 23 seconds to go. The Seahawks called a full timeout after junior guard Jesse Konadu (Alexandria, Va.) knocked down a pair of free throws to even up the game.
Scott finished the game with 16 points and eight rebounds for Marymount while Hoellich chipped in 11 points and game-high nine boards.
St. Mary's will begin a four-game home stand on Monday, January 27th when St. Mary's welcomes league newcomer, Christopher Newport University (11-4, 4-3 CAC), to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another league tilt at 8:00 p.m.
